I write them but only out of habit instead of a regularity. For instance, I have a Superman series in the pipeline that chronicles his life as a teenager all the way towards him as the Man of Steel that we all knew.
There are sources of inspiration regarding that fic. Smallville, American Alien, And Earth One to name a few. Earth One is what gave me the idea of a female Lex. Despite these influences the series does have it's own voice. While mine modernizes Clark Kent I want to revisit just what made Superman such an iconic character.
I mainly stick with original fiction. Fan Fiction is a good tool if I want to get my creative juices flowing but I find building my own superhero universe a more challenging yet adventurous experience.
